We are a group of neighbors who could no longer wait for better internet to come to us. Our prior ISP, CenturyLink, had no interest in improving its aging copper infrastructure, viewing us as insufficiently profitable. Sawdust Hill has steep terrain and a forested canopy which makes construction difficult. So, taking advantage of changes in WA law, we formed our own local utility district and petitioned our county PUD to bring high speed fiber internet to Sawdust Hill and adjacent areas.
Anything is possible, if people work together. Our petition creating our own local utility district (Sawdust Hill LUD #21) was approved on October 23, 2018 by the Kitsap Public Utility District (KPUD). Construction was completed and we were up and running by July, 2019. After fighting with CenturyLink for decades, in a year we went from DSL-like speeds of under 2 MB to blazing fiber speeds over 900 MB. Not only did this raise all of our property values, it allowed us to work from home and stream web content during Covid.
If you have any questions, please contact your local PUD. In Kitsap County, these are the folks we worked with:
Allison Cotner - acotner@kpud.org (360) 626-7701
Angela Bennink - angela@kpud.org (360) 626-7760
There is fiber optic light at the end of the tunnel. Get yours.
If you live on or near Sawdust Hill Rd (between Big Valley and Stottlemeyer or on Stottlemeyer between Sawdust Hill and Gunderson (and your property is included on the large map above) you may be to get on our grid. Contact Angela Bennink, angela@kpud.org, (360) 626-7760, for more information.
If you participated in our project or spread our mission through word-of-mouth, thank you. We couldn't have accomplished our goal without the active involvement of neighbors like you.
